5 Minutes to Feel Better (do this today!)

Did you know you can change the way you feel right now? Maybe today you’re feeling stuck, anxious, unhappy or overwhelmed. Maybe you’re just feeling blah (that’s a feeling right?). Then again, maybe you just want to be intentional about feeling GOOD. Guess what? If you’re interested in feeling better, we can make that happen right now, in 5 minutes. How? We’ll show you right below.

But first! Nerd out on this excerpt from an article from John Hopkins Medicine:

“The mechanism for the connection between health and positivity remains murky, but researchers suspect that people who are more positive may be better protected against the inflammatory damage of stress. Another possibility is that hope and positivity help people make better health and life decisions and focus more on long-term goals. Studies also find that negative emotions can weaken immune response. What is clear, however, is that there is definitely a strong link between “positivity” and health. Additional studies have found that a positive attitude improves outcomes and life satisfaction across a spectrum of conditions—including traumatic brain injury, stroke and brain tumors.”

Here is the exercise:

1. Get out a piece of paper. Write down your name and then create a list, numbered one through five. Your job is to write down five things that you’re doing right. Yes, five things that you are doing well, trying hard at, that are going well because of YOUR effort. Caution: this might be one of the hardest things you do all year. It’ an important exercise however because our brains naturally focus on the negative. And when it comes to how we talk to ourselves about ourselves, it’s usually critical. So, take the time on purpose to list out what’s going right. Pat yourself on the back if you want for bonus points.

2. Repeat this process for at least two other people in your life. This might mean your spouse, your kids, your boss or your co-worker. This will be particularly effective if you choose folks who you may be feeling a bit of frustration, disappointment or negativity toward. And, if everything is going well, still do this exercise and keep the good vibes flowing.

Gratitude is the healthiest of human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the move likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.
