Christmas Budget Planner

Do you know some of us act like we are surprised that Christmas comes on December 25th every single year? No it’s true! All of the sudden we panic both budget & time wise to get everything in by the deadline! You know, the deadline that comes on the same day every year?

This year we want to help you out. The amount you spend on Christmas can really get out of hand, especially when you consider party, decorations, teacher gifts and all the things we don’t always think about at first! We’re sharing this free Christmas Budget Planner to make this less panic-y!

So, let’s make a plan. Let’s be intentional. Let’s plan everything out and stay on track. When you have the funds to fund your plan, you’re able to give and celebrate in a generous spirit (rather than a stressed, Scroogey spirit). That’s the most fun way to celebrate!

Using this tracker will help you this year. But where the magic REALLY starts to work is when you sit down and plot everything out for next year. You go through everything you want to see & do & buy & have for the Christmas season, being sure to keep true to what’s most important about the season to you. After you determine that, add up all the categories of spending and come to your total sum. You’ll then take that number and divide it by 12. That dollar amount is now the amount you can set aside in a sinking fund each month in order to be ready to go by next Christmas! A sinking fund is a fancy accounting word that really just means a savings account with a purpose. So, unlike your long-term emergency fund which is also a savings account, the sinking fund is something you know almost exactly how much and when you’ll need to spend it.

So, take the planner to use for this season. Then print another copy and get serious about being ready to be generous and full of joy next season when you aren’t stressed about the Christmas plan or the funding of the Christmas plan!

2 steps to being instantly happier

Last night we were so fortunate to have Katie & Brandon Oakes as our guest speakers for our Dream Date Night: Generosity. Below are two of the tips they shared with us about generosity that really blew our minds!

1. Be generous.

How joyful do you feel when you’re generous? Think about anytime you’ve been able to give your time, you talents, your money to someone who really needed it. Think about when you’ve been able to be generous for no reason even. How did that make you feel? We bet you’re smiling right now, thinking about it! Being generous MAKES you happy. It’s actually kind of a selfish thing to do, if you think about it. Being generous 100% makes you happy. So, if you want to be happy, BE GENEROUS.

You can totally be in control of your own mood, mental health, happiness by being generous. In this way, it’s a really neat thought to think that you can protect your joy by being generous. You can be proactive and protective about your joy by being generous.

So right now, how can you be generous? Give someone a compliment, pay for someone’s coffee, pick a way to be generous!

2. Give what you need.

Sometimes you feel like you are in need of something in particular, maybe a mood boost, help with the kids, a hug, loving words. Do you know the act of giving that away will actually help you fill a need. It’s a weird phenomenon, but it absolutely works! SO next time you feel that way, give a try and watch your happiness levels instantly go up!

What is the most generous thing someone has ever done for you?

This is a great first question to ask when thinking about generosity.

As you think about the most generous thing someone has ever done for you, take note of how you feel inside. Maybe a warm fuzzy feeling? Maybe you can’t help but smile or even hold back tears?

Those feelings are evidence of a motto from our pastor that we love:

Generosity generates goodness.

There’s also a concept of reciprocity that generates goodness. When someone is generous to you, a sense of obligation to also be generous is often generated within you. That’s a good thing! As the scripture says:

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. Hebrews 10:24-25

Now, another great question to ask is to think of a time when you were the one being generous. Think about a time, then take a moment to think about how it made you feel.

Did you feel great?

Did you feel fabulous?

If that’s the case, why aren’t you being generous more often?

There are many traps that keep us from being generous.

  • “Let me know” is a phrase I’d love to have end. When someone is in a tough spot, we tell them to let us know how we can help. We’ve all done it, we’d all rather do something more it’s just hard.
    • The solution is to “Do unto others.” Think about what you’d want done in the exact same situation, reversed. Then just do it. Don’t ask for permission. Just do it.
  • We also get paralyzed from being generous because we think whatever gesture it is needs to be big, be bold or be perfect. So, because we can’t do something big, we do nothing.
    • The solution is to do for one what you would do for many. Likewise, give a little (time, words, energy, money) until you can give a lot.
  • Unwillingness to ask for or accept help
    • This is a societal problem. We’re all so used to trudging along and doing it all ourselves that we don’t give others the opportunity to bless us. And we’ve already gone through how amazing it feels to get & give generously, so why are we doing it?

So, let’s change the game. Let’s be aggressively generous and start generating goodness all around our communities! You can be generous with your time, your words and your money.

So, what’s it going to be today? How can you be generous today?
