3 Super Specific Ways to Maintain Momentum with Your Goals So You Actually Achieve Them This Year
•
We know you’ve got big goals this year. We know it’s still early enough for you to be excited! We’re hoping to get to you before any breakdowns happen. We want you to keep the momentum you feel on the first of the year toward achieving your hopes and dreams. And we’ve got three super specific strategies to do just that.
1. Chunk it down.
Losing 40 pounds or getting debt free may be exciting but if you’re not careful, it can also be overwhelming. On Day 7 you might see that big exciting, doable, life-changing goal as a big, unslayable giant. So, chunk it down. What is the smallest version of that goal that you can set for THIS MONTH? So, it may look like this:
- Lose 40 pounds
- Lose 5 pounds OR
- Workout 20 times OR
- Meal prep all lunches OR
- Get Debt Free
- Start budget OR
- List all debts smallest to biggest OR
- Cut up credit cards OR
- Pay off one credit card
- Organize House
- Create to-do list OR
- Organize closet OR
- Purge pantry OR
- Clothes
You can see how chunking it down makes it more doable and keeps you on the path to success!

2. Check in daily.
If you’re really committed to a particular goal, you need to focus on it every day. The best way to do this is to check in daily. The simplest way to do this is to ask yourself in the morning (write it out for best results):
What am I doing today to get closer to my goal?
In our examples, that looks like:
- What am I doing today to lose 40 pounds?
- Going to the gym @ 3pm
- Running 1 mile @ 7am
- Eating my meal prep & nothing else
- Drinking 100oz of water
- What am I doing today to get out of debt?
- Canceling one credit card
- Deleting Amazon off my phone
- Putting up XXX on Marketplace
- Playing games with kids (instead of going out to eat / ordering a movie)
- What am I doing today to get organized?
- Gathering all the paper in one basket while I cook breakfast
- Donating all of my youngest child’s too-small clothes while she’s in preschool
- Reorganizing the junk drawer after school pick up
As you can see, you have to be specific if you want the most success. The truth is your brain will work to make sure you keep your word to yourself if you write it down in the morning. And the more specific you are, the less wiggle room you can give yourself in doing what you said you were going to do. This is called pre-deciding. Be predetermining what you’re going to do and when, you save yourself brain calories later in the day. That teeny tiny little bit of resistance later on in your day can absolutely make the difference in you doing the thing and not doing the thing. Plus, when you write things down you have a visual cue to be reminded of your goals and it teaches your brain to really get used to the idea and encode it into your brain.

3. Build goals into your routine.
Routines are time management on autopilot! You already have routines, whether you’re aware of them or not. The trick is to make them match your priorities and needs. What is your current morning routine? Brush teeth, check phone, drink coffee, wake kids? You could change that to brush teeth, workout, drink water, wake kids, check phone and make your goal a habit.

If you decide on the actions you need to take to achieve your goals and place them into your routines somehow, then they’re basically as good as done. Morning routines are great if you have spiritual or health goals. You can build marriage or family goals into evening routines. Maybe every Sunday is when to take time to work on your book? Whatever it is, make it part of your routine. And get it on the schedule!
There you have it, three simple ways to keep your momentum going on the goals you set this year! WE hope this serves you well and we can’t wait to hear how you crush it this year!
